by Bhasker Gupta Jatin Lalit, along with Anand Milind and Nadim Shravan, forms the fourth wave of composers in Indian commercial music. The emphasis turned towards youth-oriented pop sensibilities and any tinge of classical music or ghazals that ruled the charts in early '80s was abolished. The sound became less orchestrated and more harmoniously involuntary, and marked the end of the golden era of evergreen classics. This short-lived era also signifies a transition period between the old and new orders, and thus does not hold much of a gleam for earth shaking experimentation or unconventional innovations. Whatever music came after this era was completely devoid of the styles of old orders. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander was the first biggest success of Jatin Lalit and brought them into the national limelight. Both the film and its soundtrack touched the hearts of the youth and were considered straight in line with the similar success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. "Pehla Nasha" became the lighthearted love anthem kindling the fire in many bedrooms around the country with its beautiful piano-based background and soulful vocals by Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam. "Are Yaaro Mere Pyaro," "Hamse Hai Sara Jahan," and the title track "Yahan Ke Hum Sikandar" are lively, melodious, youthful songs and help deliver a complete album. "Roothkar Hamse" stands apart from the rest by being the only melancholic song on this offering. Though it was the music of Saajan that ruled the charts that year, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander is an important milestone in Indian film music, especially because of "Pehla Nasha," which will easily find itself at the zenith in any assorted list of greatest love songs of this era. Jatin Lalit repeated this success with Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge two years later.
