In the world of the North London quartet Let’s Wrestle, romance is an endless disappointment, leading only to ennui and heavy sighing rather than anything approaching fun or fulfillment. “I’m always a friend but never a lover will I be,” exhales singer Wesley Patrick Gonzalez on “Always a Friend,” “I act the comedian but nobody really notices me.” Shedding the puppyish indie shambling of their first two albums — 2009′s In the Court of the Wrestling Let’s and 2011′s Nursing Home — for elegant classicism, these songs are enhanced by mellow strings and contemplative guitars. They sound like the work of people adept at adopting a “don’t care” pose as they lurk in the kitchen at parties, but who rush home to fill the pages of a diary with feverish passions. “I Am Fond of You,” “Tied Up,” “Care for You”: Let’s Wrestle has chosen to specialize in romantic inertia, expanding the self-sabotage of the pathologically uptight into bedsit melodramas. It makes sense, then, that the excellent “Codeine and Marshmallows,” as sweetly downbeat as the title suggests, should salute the tightly wound phrasing of Robyn Hitchcock (“My baby’s gone far away…to Queensbridge Road”) while “Always a Friend” bleakly echoes the bitter wit of Orange Juice’s “Consolation Prize.” They might make life sound like something of a trial, but artistically, at least, Let’s Wrestle is growing up in style.
