Kenneth Connor，KennethConnorMBE(6June1918–28November1993)wasanEnglishcomedystage,radio,filmandTVactor,bestknownforhisappearancesintheCarryOnfilms.BorninIslington,London,thesonofanavalpettyofficerwhoorganisedconcertpartiesConnorfirstappearedonthestageattheageof2asanorgan-grinder`smonkeyinoneofhisfather`sshows,inPortsmouth.By11yearsold,hehadhisownact.HeattendedtheCentralSchoolofSpeechandDrama,wherehewasaGoldMedalwinner.ConnormadehisprofessionaldebutinJMBarrie`sTheBoyDavid,atHisMajesty`sTheatre,London,inDecember1936.DuringWWIIheservedasaninfantrygunnerwiththeMiddlesexRegimentbutcontinuedactingbytouringItalyandtheMiddleEastwiththeStarsInBattledressconcertpartyandENSA.WhilewaitingtobedemobbedinCairo,ConnorreceivedatelegramfromWilliamDevlinaskinghimtojointhenewlyformedBristolOldVic,wherehegainedasolidgroundingintheclassics.HemovedontotheLondonOldViccompanyfora1947-48seasonattheNewTheatre.HismostnotableperformancestherewereasChaplaindeStogumberinSaintJoanandDobchinskyinTheGovernmentInspector,whichstarredAlecGuinness.Realisinghewasnota``tall,impressivejuvenileleadorayounglovertype``hedecidedtospecialiseincomedy.HetookoverfromPeterSellersinTedRay`sradioshowRay`saLaugh-launchedbytheBBCin1949asasuccessortoTommyHandley`sITMA.Heplayedthebrother-in-lawandotheroddballcharacterssuchasSidneyMincing.RaytookConnorwithhimtohisTVshows,andthepairwouldstartogetherinthethirdCarryOnfilm,CarryOnTeacher.OnoccasionheappearedinTheGoonShow,standinginforregularcastmembersstruckdownbyillness.Healsoappearedintheanarchic,Goon-styleTVseriesIdiotWeekly,Price2d(1956)andAShowCalledFred(1956).In1955,ConnorgainedasmallroleinthefilmTheLadykillers(1955)asataxidriver.In1958,hewascastinthefirstCarryOnfilm,CarryOnSergeantandbecameoneoftheregularcastintheseries,appearinginseventeenoftheoriginalthirtyfilmsandmanyoftheassociatedtelevisionproductions.AlongsideKennethWilliamsandEricBarker,ConnorwasoneofonlythreeactorstoappearinboththefirstandlastoftheoriginalsequenceofCarryOnfilms(CarryOnSergeantandCarryOnEmmanuelle).Inh
