by Chris Woodstra For Practical Jokers, his first post-Enz project, Judd left his arty leanings behind in favor of a tight blend of mid-'60s pop, punk, and new wave, resulting in a fine collection of fractured, eccentric pop songs that were surprisingly accessable. With the exception of "Ayatollah," which instantly dates the album, much of it remains fresh with a timeless appeal. The quirky "Counting the Beat," became a hit single in Australia/New Zealand. [A resequenced, slightly modified version of the album with the single "One Good Reason (Gimme Love)" added was issued in the U.S. as Counting the Beat in 1982. In a somewhat confusing move, Mushroom Records in Australia, as part of the label's 25th anniversary, reissued Counting the Beat with the original artwork but with the track listing and order of Practical Jokers. "One Good Reason" and "The Flack" -- both found on the original Counting the Beat album -- were added to the end of the disc.]
