简介

by Thom Jurek These Kits, assembled by violinist Carlos Zingaro and pianist/guitarist and electronic keyboard specialist Jorge Lima Barretto are an arresting mix of old and new, known, and unknown, tempered and free; they are also textural wonders of both improvisation and composition. From part one of "Kit I," for violin and synthesizer, the listener can begin to comprehend the strategies at work in the execution of these pieces. The violin's sonority is the focal point of each piece, as such it is placed in differing contexts of assonance and dissonance by Barretto, painting its timbres with different shades and colors to create the appearance of drama in stillness or vice versa. On the second "Kit" (part two of the first closes the album making this a roundabout suite), a piano prepared with 144 springs is played like a hyperactive drum against Zingaro's bowed multiphonics moving them both off the tonal center and into a desert of angular shapes and illusory colors. On "Kit V," when Baretto uses an electric guitar, prepared with nuts, bolts, and played through a radio, something else occurs as disembodies voices from phantom broadcasts join the dialogue, slipping in between Zingaro's sweeping single note runs that move from middle to high register and back again in ostinato patterns. Baretto is both fingering and bowing the guitar, shifting the adorned strings into reverberation centers for eerie frequencies as Zingaro attempts to bring the notion of "song" into the center of all this dislocation -- he succeeds. All of the music played here was recorded in real time, making this an even more stunning collection of duets. They are musical, fierce, strange, and beautiful.
