A Lot Like Birds are going to release their new record Divisi on May 5th. The band recently parted ways with ex-Dance Gavin Dance singer Kurt Travis, who has been their vocalist since 2010. It has been four years since the release of the last A Lot Like Birds record: No Place was released in 2013 and was the second (and as of now last) record Travis performed vocals on. We can be curious how the band will work without him, as their new bassist Matt Coate (who joined in 2015) is going to take over his part. Cory Lockwood might also be going to sing, as he was taking vocal lessons. Sounds interesting? Indeed! A Lot Like Birds released a teaser along with the album announcement, but it only consists of a repeated drone in the background, while some ‘oh’-vocals lay over it. A dark and mysterious vibe that’s not revealing too much, but it definitely works out for getting listeners excited for what’s coming. People who are familiar with A Lot Like Birds will know how diverse their music can be. Mathy post-hardcore and a lot of experimentation are at the core of their sound. To get a vision of what the new record was influenced by, the band put together a Spotify playlist; it shows songs that they’ve been listening to while writing the record and features artists like Sigur Rós, Björk, Mew, Radiohead, Daughter and many more. As stated by the band: ‘This is a Playlist of songs old and new from bands that we were listening to during the writing process of LPIV. Some of them are friends, some of them are songs we specifically cited for tones or general moods we were going for, some of them inspired vocal character’s or melodies, some were bands that were on repeat in the van for overnight drives on tour. For the most part, we really can’t help but just sound like A Lot Like Birds in the end, but if you listen closely you can hear how these artists influenced certain decisions we made.’
