For over two decades, Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet has been enchanting listeners and building a loyal audience across five continents with their tightly harmonized renditions of many vocal jazz genres. Their signature sound reminds the listener of such iconic vocal groups as Lambert，Hendricks，Ross and the Manhattan Transfer, but they have put their distinctive stamp on 4-part harmony jazz with their own versions of inventive vocalese, big band swing, American Songbook classics, and original songs. UVJQ has carved out their unique place on the vocal jazz scene with their latest CD, a feast of original music, lyrics, and arrangements spotlighting the marriage of clever lyrics reminiscent of Dave Frishberg, Cole Porter, or Jon Hendricks with a rich array of musical styles, while staying true to their jazz roots. They take the listener on an exciting journey through their own songbook of delightfully literate lyrics, vocalese, Basie-infused swing, bop, scat, lush ballads, Chicago blues, cool jazz, hot samba, and even classic soul. Backed by a terrific jazz band, the singers announce the album with He Was The Cat, the story of the late jazz singer Eddie Jefferson, sung as an original vocalese tribute. It was immediately heralded as a tour de force by Eddie's friend and musical partner, alto saxophonist Richie Cole, who deemed it worthy of a future Cole-UVJQ collaboration. UVJQ's creative music and lyrics also caught the attention of NPR, which resulted in an on-air performance chat with Weekend Edition host Susan Stamberg, for the second time in the group's career. Their new recording simultaneously rose to the #18 spot on the Billboard Jazz Chart and the #4 spot for most popular vocal jazz recordings on Amazon, with a special citation for being one of the Top 3 "Hot New Vocal Jazz Releases" on Amazon. In addition, the group received high praise from vocal jazz legend Don Shelton (original member of the Singers Unlimited and the Hi-Lo's) and jazz legend Bob Dorough, who was so enchanted with UVJQ that he plans to integrate some of their original songs into his own show. Beginning in Fall 2012, Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet can be heard in permanent rotation on the jazz vocal channels of Pandora Radio. Accompanied by top jazz instrumentalists, Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet has performed at international jazz festivals in the US, Canada, and Europe, where they have shared the headliner stages with Tony Bennett, Nancy Wilson, Sonny Rollins, Dr. John, the Mingus Big Band, Chris Botti, Aaron Neville, and many other iconic artists. They have opened concerts for the Four Freshmen, Charlie Byrd, and Ahmad Jamal; been profiled twice on NPR's "Weekend Edition"; been featured on Jazz Smithsonian, Radio Jazz Copenhagen, and countless radio programs across the world. They have performed live with symphony orchestras and big bands in several countries, and entertained at festivals, clubs, and international, national, and regional events of all kinds. In November 2012, Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet will perform with the world renowned Cote Ouest Big Band at France's premier jazz festival, Les Nuits du Jazz. UVJQ and the Cote Ouest Big Band first performed together in 2004, and they will reunite to celebrate the Band's 30th anniversary with this special encore performance in Nantes, France. In 2008, Sony，BMG Records included Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet in a compilation CD that featured a dazzling array of artists, past and present, who have defined the vocal genre, including Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Carmen McRae, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, The Manhattan Transfer, and the NY Voices.
