There is a double meaning to this: Each piece carries the name of a Chinese proverb of four Chinese characters, and the group itself is a quartet of four, improvising at the junction of Chinese and Western music. All pieces are titled with so-called cheng yu, colloquial Chinese idioms consisting of a set of four characters. Cheng yu are widespread and in common use, they depict the essence of a life situation or an emotional state in a metaphorical or poetic way. Interpretations are differing considerably, and translating them is not an easy task. Their ambiguity may be one of the reasons for their unbroken popularity among Chinese speakers. For recording this CD, the band members didn’t get too caught up in musical theory: A certain 'cheng yu' was chosen as the general mood for an improvisation, and the pieces were structured along simple musical parameters, i.e. a certain tempo or rhythm, contrasting dynamics, or a combination of instruments playing together or against each other. After the recording session (which only took the time of one short afternoon), the group had peers from the art and music field in Taiwan listen to the music, and later on asked them for their interpretations of the cheng yu included here. The questions were: ‘What does this idiom mean to you?’ ‘What do you see in it?’ ‘In which situation would you use it?’ The answers to these questions are the texts printed in this booklet.
