Finnish Soprano Soile Isokoski is a soprano that manages to offer understated roles both on the opera stage and recital hall stage. She is all about the music and though she is a very beautiful woman she is not about strident glamour. She is particularly well suited to Mozart and Strauss - currently she is singing a radiant Donna Elvira to Ildebrando D'Arcangelo's Don Giovanni with the Los Angeles Opera. She is equally at home in the Strauss roles - especially as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier. Here, with fine collaboration with pianist Marita Viitasalo, she presents and entire recital of the songs of Richard Strauss. Her voice is full yet without the heavy underlying vibrato we often hear when sopranos sing these songs. Isokoski has a clear, clean, unfettered vocal production that makes her ascent into the higher ranges seem utterly effortless. "Die Nacht" demonstrates Isokoski's connection to the text and emotions and shows off the subtlety of her phrasing. The same could be said for "Meinem Kinde," where one truly believes in the tenderness of a mother singing to her child. Isokoski's style is free of much scooping or ornamentation (as in "Zueignung"), but she gets to the core of the music: she seems to be singing from the heart. Many of these lieder are a perfect match for her tessitura, like "Die Georgine" and "Ccilie," which sit so well in her voice.
