by Brian O'Neill Hot Blood perfectly summarizes the trends (circa the disc's 2002 release) in guitar-oriented mainstream rock. You can hear bits of Stone Temple Pilots -- the latter-period stuff when Weiland's crew wanted to be Redd Kross instead of Pearl Jam -- but more observably, it nails everything Dave Grohl has ever done: "Get In" sounds like an outtake from the Foo Fighters' The Colour & the Shape and the slippery bassline of "Underwater Fire" would fit perfectly on One by One, with the same lackadaisical psychedelic underpinning inherent on that disc. Meanwhile, "Forms" could be from Songs for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age, before it kicks in and starts to channel old Jane's Addiction, which is something the thrashing "Bang the Drum" manages in its entirety. Not a bad disc from this tenured and often overlooked band.
