20世纪40年代中叶，在印度的加尔各答，特蕾莎修女（Geraldine Chaplin 饰）在她的修道院里教孩子们地理。有一天，她和另一个姐妹离开修道院为她们的女孩们寻找食物，没想到却陷入了一场骚乱。尽管她们设法回到了修道院，特蕾莎修女眼前却依然浮现出路有饿殍的景象，挥之不去，深感震撼，她决定离开修道院，全身心地去关怀那些更贫穷的人们。到达贫民区后，特蕾莎修女教孩子们读和写，然而她却不得不面对来自成人的误解和不信任，只是源于她的肤色。当修女坚持不懈地帮助这些贫困者过后，一些她在修道院原先的学生们也受到感化，化身修女追随她一同完成这项伟大志愿……
