by Richie Unterberger Bouncing high, wispy vocals off spare, bass-heavy arrangements, the mysterious Ms. Marias (is reminiscent) of The Young Marble Giants, or some of the more delicate acts on the Cherry Red label in the early '80s. Her debut album is a virtual collaboration with Wire's Bruce Gilbert, who co-writes all songs with one Angela Conway (apparently Marias' "real" name) and helps with production. Marias' voice is undeniably pretty and sensual, and the songs are awash with many nice little synthetic flourishes, sometimes sounding like recorders or pan-pipes. Very pleasant in short doses, the cold sheen can lose its luster over the course of two sides, especially on the tracks where the drums thud louder than they ought to.
