john beyer,director of mediawatch-uk, formerly known as the national viewers' and listeners' association, a rôle which he took over from mary whitehouse in 1994, after having joined in 1976. their aim is to provide a watchdog and pressure group for decency in broadcasting. he retired in september 2009, when he was succeeded by vivienne pattinson.
