He is one of the founding members of YG Family predecessor MF Family (Majah Flavah Family). Perry was born in Oakland in 1971. As far as we know, he’s half-Chamorro, half-Japanese. When he was sixteen, he was shot by a gang member while walking out of a store in a bad neighbourhood (the way it was described sounds like he wasn’t directly involved, just in the wrong place at the wrong time). He dropped out of school and spent a year recovering from his injuries, then was sent to Guam to live with his relatives and finish high school. There, he started going to clubs, writing music and designing graffiti. Guam didn’t have much of a hip-hop scene at that point, and Perry is widely regarded as a pioneer of that genre. Some rappers and DJs currently active on Guam credit him for teaching them and paving the way for them. Back then, he was known as Pure P and had a hip-hop group called the Raggedy Boyz. He was well-known enough on the island to do a TV commercial for Kentucky Fried Chicken (for which the Raggedy Boyz became the Kick Buckets). At least up to 2004 or so, Perry still performed as a DJ on Guam. He’s also known as Zodiak, and works with two other Guamanian musicians as the “Zodiak crew”. He’s released two tracks as Zodiak on a Guamanian music compilation. Perry and Sean both graduated from JFK high school on Guam, and knew each other in the early nineties. They produced an album for Korean hip-hop group Honey in 1995, and Perry moved in with Sean on Guam before the beginning of MF Family. This is when he was recruited – after Keep Six flopped, but before Jinusean’s debut. He went on to write hit after hit for the label, in addition to training some of the artists (notably GDYB, Lexy and Teddy). He’s also the producer for all the albums released by YG Entertainment and can be heard on many of them, either singing, rapping, or doing back vocals. He released a solo album in 2001, but decided not to appear on stage anymore around 2003 – probably so he could focus on all the producing/songwriting he does for YG, but there might be other reasons.
