本片是以影坛传奇人物奥森·威尔斯筹拍《大国民》一片始末为蓝本的影片,奥森·威尔斯(列维·施瑞博尔 饰),这位在百老汇大为轰动的年轻才子在26岁那年,决定前往好莱坞拍摄他的第一部电影《大国民》。问题是众所皆知,这部影片是在影射报界的赫斯特(詹姆斯·克伦威尔 饰),因而遭到赫斯特全力反对,甚至还企图买下该片的放映版权以阻止它公开播映,然而不畏权势的奥森·威尔斯最后仍排除万难,令这部关于报界大亨利用媒体炒作新闻的经典名片得以在美国公开放映。
