by Ken Dryden The Mitchell-Ruff Duo, with pianist Dwike Mitchell and bassist/French horn player Willie Ruff, had only been together for two years by the time this LP was made. Their piano/bass improvisations of several standards, including "Angel Eyes," "Thou Swell," and "Gone With the Wind," are masterpieces. But even more intriguing are the piano/French horn duets, especially the captivating take of Duke Jordan's "Jordu" and classical works by Ravel (Pavanne) and Debussy (My Reverie). They collaborated in the composition of "Fugue for Lulu," an intricate Bach-like fugue for piano and bass. Although the amusing cartoon front cover may give the impression that this is a live date at the original Birdland club, these are studio recordings. This LP on the long-defunct Forum label will be rather difficult to acquire.
