简介

Philippine group Freshmen has two musical personalities. One side of Freshmen likes passionate, easy listening balladry, and the other side likes more daring music, including folk-rock and the blues. Side one of the cassette is dedicated to the adventurous side of the group, and opens on the rollicking folk-rock number "Pokpok" (slang for "prostitute"). The music is distinguished by a catchy, substantive chorus; the music and the group's performance is reminiscent of famed folk-rock artist Freddie Aguilar. The lyrics to "Pokpok," however, are somewhat disappointing and not something Freddie Aguilar would do, as the song is about a guy who meets a prostitute and takes her to a motel room, where he sees "all of her that he wants to see." The lyrics aren't really dirty, but much they're less noble than the song's strong melody and ambience would suggest. No other song has such suggestive lyrics, though some other lyrics on side one are somewhat juvenile and shallow. "Walang Hanggang Ligaya" (Never Ending Happiness) is a pretty folk-rock ballad about love, and contains appealing slide guitar. "Kita Kits Sa Baso" (Seeing You in the Glass) has farcical lyrics, but the music itself is spirited and bluesy. One doesn't expect this type of music from this group: The album cover shows six fresh-faced male youths who one would assume sing easy listening love songs, as do most other fresh-faced artists in the Philippines. Looks can be deceiving, though. On "Drifted" (still on side one), Freshmen sing an emotive ballad about the uncertainties of the future. Side two of the cassette contains the easy listening side of Freshmen.
