Perhaps because there are two of them, the writer，directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor seem to like to employ multiple composers on their films, which are always dramas with plenty of violence, whether they fall into the genres of crime or fantasy. Robert Williamson provided some music for the Neveldine，Taylor film Crank, and he was paired with Johannes Kobilke on Pathology (which they wrote, but did not direct). Here, his partner is Geoff Zanelli (Disturbia, Hitman). These are young composers well versed in the 21st century style of Hollywood action movie composing, which mixes some orchestral (or orchestral-sounding) elements with electronic tracks and even sound effects. For Gamer, a science fiction film concerning a video game, they lean a bit more toward the electronics, appropriately. Zanelli is one of three guitarists prominently featured, along with Aaron Robinson and writer，director Taylor himself, and some of the music sounds like it belongs on a heavy metal album, e.g., the cue called "Gina Parker Smith." The combination of such rock music with synth pop is foreshadowed by the inclusion of two songs up-front, Marilyn Manson's cover of Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" from his 1995 album Smells Like Children and Bloodhound Gang's 2000 dance-ready novelty hit "The Bad Touch," from their Hooray for Boobies album. Williamson and Zanelli write plenty of their own synth pop, including the tracks "Society" and "Blood Ball." This is not subtle material, but it is stirring, and Gamer is a movie that requires such bombast.
