小路易斯·格赛特生于纽约一个黑人家庭。曾经是篮球队的明星队员,因脚部受伤,转而从事戏剧演出。60年代末进入电影界,在几部影片如《房产主》、《尼日尔河》等中扮演性格角色。之后几年主要活跃在电视界,1977年在电视剧《根》中的黑奴一角,获电视艾美奖。1982年以《军官和绅士》荣获奥斯卡最佳男配角金像奖,成为美国电影史上第三位获得此荣誉的黑人演员。多才多艺的他不仅在表演上较为成功,并能独自填词谱曲。他还开办了一所戏剧学校,主要培训贫民区的黑人学童,1978年马丁．路德基金会授予他人道主义奖。
