by Andrew Hamilton Atlantic Records brought in the heavy artillery for Johnny Gill's first album. Producer, Freddie Perren came with a long resumé of hit productions by the Jacksons, Tavares, the Sylvers, and others. The combination flowed on paper but didn't jell in the studio -- no chemistry. Perhaps this is why Atlantic titled Gill's second LP Chemistry. "Super Love" has a heavy, thud-beat that's derivative and mundane; ditto for "Guilty" -- a song needs more than just a wicked bassline. A remake of Sam & Dave's "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" is easily the best ballad. The others -- "Thank You," "Show Her Love," "I'm Sorry," and "You" -- are average and indistinguishable. "I Love Makin' Music" is the best of the uptempo numbers, but when you consider the others, that's not saying much.
